The World of Children and Youths is at once an eye-catching coffee table book and a stimulating teaching tool, at a very affordable price of under $30 for a high quality hardcover. The photographic reproductions are impressive for their clarity and brilliant color, and the volume is handsomely bound.Beyond its immediate visual attractiveness, the true value of the book lies in its unique combination of pictures and words. Nearly 400 photographs depict infants through teenagers from around the world, all taken by the author over his many years as an educator and traveler in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. An appendix provides suggestions for teachers about how this can be done through various exercises. Beyond the provocative combination of the visual and verbal arts, I see a further and unusual formula that blends the multiculturalism of the images with the more traditional cultural literacy of the names and quotations in a fashion through which anyone who picks up the book can only benefit.
School libraries, classrooms, and faculty lounges are obvious destinations for this book, but it will also enhance waiting rooms and living rooms as a stimulating photo compilation. It is a quality production in all ways – content, print materials, and the feeling of joy and affection for youth that emerges throughout. Putting it down I was left with an enlivened view of humanity and uplifted spirit about the often difficult world we live in.
